Cool and Quirky Father’s Day Gifts You and the Kids Can Make at Home at Dahlgren

In case you need a reminder, Father's Day is Sunday, June 21! That means you have plenty of time to go shopping for Dad, but if you'd prefer to go the homemade route, we have a few suggestions! Check out these cool and quirky DIY Father's Day gift ideas!

1) "We Have a Hero" handprint board [Shanty 2 Chic]
This project supplies a free printable text that's perfect for military dads. It says, "We have a hero; We call him Daddy." Simply print out the saying and affix it to a wooden board. To the right of the saying, have your kids use paint to decorate the empty space with their handprints. Such a cute keepsake!

2) Thrifty and Fun Birthday Cake Gift [Pinching Your Pennies]
This is perfect for the dad with a sweet tooth: Arrange canned sodas and snack-sized candy bar into tiers, forming a cake shape. You can use whatever candies or sodas Dad likes, or sub in beer for the fizzy stuff!

3) Father's Day printable [Kinzie's Creations]
If your kids are a little younger, this free printable is sure to give Dad a chuckle. It's a Mad Libs-style print-out that allows kids to fill in the blank to complete sentences about their dad. It prints as a 5×7, so it's easily framed as a keepsake.

How are you celebrating Father's Day this year, Dahlgren?

Did You Know That April Is ‘Month of the Military Child’, Dahlgren Residents? Here’s More About It!

From relocations to prolonged separations from Mom or Dad, we ask a lot of our military children. In return, it's important that they receive the support and care they need to grow and prosper, both mentally and physically. That's why April has been declared Month of the Military Child. Initiated by Defense Secretary Casper Weinberger back in 1986, the month of April is a time for Americans to recognize our nation's 2 million military children for their selflessness, sacrifice, and resilience.

Think of the month as 30 days' worth of opportunities to open the lines of communication with your children, with the end goal of letting them know that they're not alone in their feelings (you'll find resources for this on the National Child Traumatic Stress Network website). You could also use Month of the Military Child as a chance to spend more time with your little ones. For instance, ask them to propose their "dream day," and make it come true (within reason, of course!).
